Air France says flight AF 066 suffered serious engine damage”

An global flight on its way to California landed in Goose Bay this afternoon after declaring a mechanical emergency.

An Air France Airbus which ran between Paris and Los Angeles was forced to land emergency at the airport of Gosse Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador.

Air France said in a statement on social media: "AF66 landed safely".

One passenger recalled the incident to the New York Daily News, saying, "We heard a big popping sound, and the airplane basically dropped, and it was trembling".

Passengers remained on the plane after it landed, waiting for stairs so that they could disembark.

The flight departed Paris Charles de Gaulle airport at 11:27 a.m. Saturday, about an hour behind its originally scheduled departure time.

Air France says the aircraft will undergo technical checks and it is working on rerouting passengers.
