Legal weed may be a windfall for McDonald's and Taco Bell”

A new study released by Green Market Report and Consumer Research Around Cannabis found that 43 percent of marijuana users residing in legalized states ate at a McDonald's restaurant in the past four weeks, reports Bloomberg.

The online survey recorded the fast food preferences of 27.500 pe0ple and was conducted over several US marketplaces with a base population of 55 million.

The study was conducted in major markets in Colorado, California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington DC, and dove into the spending habits of the people who purchased products from marijuana dispensaries, who represent 8.5% of the U.S. population. Wendy's came in third place with 17.8 percent, just barely squeaking past Burger King at 17.6 percent.

Over the four week study period, 43 percent of legal marijuana customers said they had eaten at McDonald's. Subway, however, has nearly 27,000 locations nationwide, yet peckish stoners prefer Burger King (which has about 7,500 locations) or Wendy's (about 5,700 locations) over a footlong sub.

Vice President of Consumer Research Around Cannabis Jeff Stein said the reason McDonald's is number one on the list is simple: They have the most locations. "Those competitors which better understanding cannabis users and their consumer habits can certainly close the gap by integrating what they learn through their marketing efforts".

In California, where every fast food aficionado will quickly extol the wonders of the ubiquitous local chain In-N-Out, a Double-Double is nowhere to be found on the list, with both Carl's Jr. and Jack in the Box receiving more orders than anything served Animal Style.

It's well-known that users experience an increased appetite, or "munchies", as a side-effect of cannabis consumption. The data reinforces some stereotypes of cannabis consumers, but also reveals some surprising findings. The Green Market Report, meanwhile, focuses on cannabis financial and economic information.
