London mayor seeks powers to fight non-road pollution

London mayor seeks powers to fight non-road pollution”

However, the city authorities believe their ability to tackle these sources or emissions are limited and as such Khan has written to Gove setting out the powers he believes are required to address London's illegal levels of air pollution.

Just days after City Hall issued a "high alert" for the rising air pollution levels in the city, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has now written to the environment secretary to call for a ban on wood burning stoves in some urban areas to improve the situation.

It would deal a huge blow to homeowners who rely on either fireplaces or wood burning stoves to keep their properties warm during the bitter cold months.

Restaurants and hotels accused Sadiq Khan of putting jobs at risk with his proposals for tighter emission limits on stoves and the creation of zones where burning solid fuels is forbidden.

A spokesman for Mr Khan said the proposals would include "very small zones to curb pollution caused by wood-burning stoves" by 2025.

Yesterday he mayor said he wished to "protect those people that have bought wood burning stoves in good faith" but wanted powers to ban burning of any wood or coal in "zero-emission zones". "It is one of a number of ideas and it would need legislation from government and it would be at least six years away from happening".

Wood burning is most popular in the southeast, where 16 per cent of households use the stoves compared with less than five per cent in northern England and Scotland.

There are 1.5million of the trendy wood-burning stoves in Britain with 200,000 sold annually.

The suggestion follows an article published in the British Medical Journal, stating that wood burning creates 2.4 times more PM2.5 pollution than vehicles.

It is estimated that between a quarter and a third of all of London's fine-particle pollution comes from domestic wood burning.

Finally, the Mayor is calling for an update to the regulations governing the burning of solid fuel in London, which have barely been revised since the original Clean Air Act of 1956.

Open fireplaces would be prohibited and only sales of low-emission stoves allowed.
