Mohammed Shami and I must take more responsibility in ODIs: Umesh Yadav

Mohammed Shami and I must take more responsibility in ODIs: Umesh Yadav”

Big names, including R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, were missing from the Indian ODI squad that was announced ahead of the ongoing five-match series against Australia.

"The thing with ODIs is that there will always be games".

Meanwhile, Umesh, who is gearing up to play his first-ever global match at his home ground on Sunday, also said he wants to be more disciplined at the death to prevent Australia from coming up with another big score. I like those challenges. When you take wickets, you confidence also increases and you become accurate. You know the line and length you need on a particular surface and you focus on that. "I am happier playing Tests", Umesh said.

However, Umesh clarified that he was not quite ready to start picking and choosing formats.

He feels that he is at the right age to keep playing as much cricket as he can. "It doesn't matter, I would love to play any format". If I play both formats, I know it will be good for me.

To a certain extent, India now have enough seamers of quality and variety that they can manage their workloads better without losing their potency as a team.

Umesh and Shami played for the first time in Bengaluru as Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are now the regular pacers. But you can t say that you will play Tests only because there will be a time when there are not playing enough games in a season.

Separating them to play the respective formats they are good at seems not only the logical choice, but also helps the players function at peak fitness. "I think it's good for fast bowlers".

"I think ODIs will continue to be played more than Tests and I like Test cricket because you have time". You are playing in sub-continent and it is very tough on the body. Slow wicket, no pace and bounce for fast bowlers, you have give your 100 per cent. "After that, coming straight into the ODI side with same intensity and pace is very hard", Umesh said on the eve of the fifth ODI, scheduled for Sunday, October 1 in Nagpur. "It's a good concept as we get proper rest and look after ourselves properly". The taxing home stretch followed by a Champions Trophy campaign and an ODI series in Windies took a toll as Umesh mostly bowled within himself in the Sri Lanka Tests.

"If you have a lot of Tests scheduled throughout the year, if you are playing around 15-20 Tests in a year, then you'll have to take a call (about your preferred format)". You get time in the longest format to execute plans. The former bowled the most number of overs among the Indian pacers during the busy season, which saw him pick 30 wickets in 12 matches. In the nets you do practice but at that time, you don't really understand where the ball is going and what a situation is.

Unlike his on-field demeanour and bowling style, the soft-spoken Umesh talked unhurriedly about juggling different formats, and the importance of managing the workload for a fast bowler.
