Multiple fires break out near Lompoc, burn almost 600 acres

As of 10 p.m. Friday night, no injuries had been reported as a result of the fires, and while reports of a auto dragging a chain had been put out via emergency radio traffic earlier in the day, the cause of the almost simultaneous blazes had not been confirmed.

Santa Barbara County Fire spokesman Mike Eliason said the 600-acre blaze is 10 percent contained.

Concialdi says four homes, one commercial building and an outbuilding were burned after the flames kicked up Monday and forced evacuations.

Update: 7:05 p.m.

[7:06 p.m. PDT] All street closures within Lompoc city limits have been lifted, according to the Lompoc Police Department. The blaze has grown to 570 acres.

The Lompoc Airport is closed and being used to support firefighting operations, according to the City of Lompoc.

Smoke from the fires originally was spotted on Purisima Road, but within minutes, fire was also seen on Harris Grade Road at Rucker Road, according to emergency dispatch reports.

Update, 5:15 p.m.

Rucker Road and Purisima Road are closed.

Harris Grade Road from Highway 135 to Burton Mesa Road.

Purisima Road from Highway 246 to Highway 1 is closed.

Mission Gate Road from Purisima Road to Highway 246 is closed.

[7:25 p.m. PDT] Rucker Fire is 10% contained according to Santa Barbara County Fire officials.

Eliason confirmed that multiple structures are threatened and three separate fires are now burning.

[5:19 p.m. PDT] Only service animals are allowed at the evacuation shelter set up at Lompoc High School.

[5:45 p.m. PDT] Air Quality Warning issued for Santa Barbara County to be in effect until Rucker Fire conditions improve.

Residents of Mission Hills can return to their homes by entering through Burton Mesa to Via Lato.

Evacuation notices were earlier sent to approximately 890 phone lines.

About 300 acres of land have burned as winds push the flames through tinder-dry brush, grass and oak.

Firefighters battled multiple vegetation fires that broke out in the Mission Hills area near Lompoc on Friday.

There also were reports of as many as six other small fires in the area, according to emergency radio traffic.

A second alarm was called shortly after the first, bringing more resources to the incident.

Rucker Fire burns almost 600 acres in.

Winds were reported to be 10 to 15 miles per hour. About 900 people were notified to evacuate.

[3:24 p.m. PDT] The Following areas are under Evacuation Order: Rucker Road east to Harris Grade and north to La Purisima and Cebada Canyon including all of North Mission Hills and La Purisima Mission.

Two helicopters and two air tankers were requested, and more resources were en route.

Additional details were not immediately available.

There was no immediate word on what caused the fires, although the California Highway Patrol indicated it was investigating whether a auto dragging a chain might have sparked them.
