Queensland Bulls' Marnus Labuschagne penalised under new cricketing rules

Queensland Bulls' Marnus Labuschagne penalised under new cricketing rules”

The ongoing JLT Cup in Australia provided one of the first instances where a new rule pertaining to on-field play, released by the International Cricket Council (ICC), was put into practice by the umpires.

However, Labuschange ended up taking his side to a four-wicket win over Cricket Australia XI, a consolation of sorts for someone whose name will now forever be etched in cricket's history books for the fake-fielding incident.

This is now a no-no.

The incident occurred during the 27th over of the Queensland Bulls (QLD) vs Cricket Australia XI (CXI) match.

Chasing 280 after sending in the visitors, the Bulls survived several hiccups to prevail with nine balls remaining.

CA XI batman Clint Hinchliffe got alarmed and increased his pace to complete the run, but soon realised that the fielder had faked the throw.

Labuschagne then took the Bulls to within reach of the target before he was well caught on the boundary by Max Bryant for 61.

"It is unfair for any fielder wilfully to attempt, by word or action, to distract, deceive or obstruct either batsman after the striker has received the ball". A five-run penalty for a harmless act such as "fake fielding" seems rather harsh. Although Labuschagne raised his hand to indicate an apology, the on-field umpires came together to discuss before eventually signalling the scorers by tapping his left shoulder to indicate the penalty runs.

Under new rules effective from Thursday, cricketers can be sent off - like in football - if they commit major offenses. "...meaning it will apply to Level 4 offences while the Level 1 to 3 offences will continue to be dealt with under the ICC Code of Conduct", ICC said while announcing these new rules.
