Stoke City boss Mark Hughes: 'Kurt Zouma is worth £40m'

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes: 'Kurt Zouma is worth £40m'”

"We have Kurt back, which is a big bonus for us, and it was unfortunate that the injury situation we found ourselves in coincided with the Chelsea game when he was unavailable", said Hughes.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes is facing a defensive crisis ahead of Saturday's Premier League game against Southampton as a dearth of fit central defenders leaves him sweating on the fitness of several key players.

Kurt Zouma is available to return after missing last week's defeat to his parent club Chelsea, while Geoff Cameron could also be in line for a recall.

Hughes, 53, reckons £7 million "rent" is a snip as Zouma's cost in the open market would be beyond Stoke.

"Kurt Zouma is a £30-40m centre-half. We can't afford that, but in the loan market we can get him here so that's a good thing", said the Welshman.

"We are at home this weekend though, we have to dictate what happens and hopefully we can do what we have done against Arsenal, Manchester United and even Chelsea, who I thought we played pretty well against". Arena is set to name his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Panama, and Trinidad & Tobago in the next couple of days, and Cameron remains an important piece of the US team, given his experience and ability to lead the USA defense.

The Frenchman joined Stoke on a season-long loan earlier in the summer after falling out of favour at Stamford Bridge.
