Wichita State enrollment up 4.2%”

Wichita Area Technical College (WATC) has experienced their largest enrollment of 4,267 students for the fall 2017 semester.

Two popular Kansas schools had a decrease in students, while three had an increase.

President John Bardo said in the news release that the university's recruiting efforts are "bearing fruit".

Wichita State is well on its way to the goal of becoming a 20,000 student campus.

The university reported 15,081 students for the fall semester, that's a 4.2% increase over fall, 2016. Total student credit hours increased 0.5 percent from to last fall.

"We are seeing shifts in student credit hours (and) headcount ratios that reflect our location and the nature of a research university in an urban area", he added.

KU has 28,447 students enrolled across all campuses, an increase of 46 students.

The increase is on goal, after the school focused on broadening recruitment efforts and retaining current students.

"We are encouraged about large increases in first-generation students and the positive effect that higher education can have on them", said Rick Muma, the senior associate vice president for Academic Affairs and Strategic Enrollment Management.

After pretty flat growth past year, enrollment at Wichita State is up 4.2 percent.

Among the six state universities in the Kansas Regents system, Fort Hays and the University of Kansas also saw a boost in enrollment; Kansas State, Emporia State and Pittsburg State all lost students.

But as many schools' numbers dropped, enrollment at Kansas' technical colleges grew more than 12 percent over a year ago. Washburn University, a municipal school, grew by 1.4 percent.

Utash says if the affiliation happens, her school will be able to recruit more students from out of state and even internationally.

Enrollment among community colleges also fell by about 2 percent. But enrollment increased across the state's technical colleges by more than 12 percent.
