Asia Minute: Trump's Asia Travels”

US President Donald Trump will make his maiden visit to Asia in November with stops in five countries-Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines, the White House announced on Friday.

Trump is likely to seek to convince North Korea's neighbours, including China, on continuing sanctions against the country in the wake of its nuclear programme, the BBC reported.

The White House said first lady Melania Trump will accompany the president on the trip, which is to include his attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in the Philippines.

During the multinational conferences and in bilateral talks on the sidelines, the growing security threat posed by North Korea is expected to dominate the discussions.

It would be Trump's first trip to the Philippines as US President.

The diplomat said the US' decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal early this year had raised questions about the administration's commitment to the region.

He also met many of them on the sidelines of UN General Assembly in NY early this month or in Europe on the margins of G-20 and G-7 summits this summer.

Trump has sparred with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, calling him a "rocket man" on a suicide mission, and warned that the East Asian country would face total devastation if it threatened the United States. Kim, in turn, has called Trump a "mentally deranged US". Efforts by Trump to apply pressure on China to rein in North Korea have seen little success, although he thanked Xi again Tuesday for his efforts. He hosted the Chinese President Xi Jinping at his Mar-a- Lago residence in the early part of his presidency and met the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the Trump Towers in NY as the president-elect. At the same time, Trump's national security team is conducting a broad review of USA strategy toward China in search of ways to counter Chinese trade practices and open up market access, a senior administration official said.

The U.S. would also like to address concerns of Chinese entities behind the theft of intellectual property and cyberattacks.

On Thursday Mr Trump met Chinese Vice Premier Liu Yandong in Washington.

"I would not say that they were our saviors, but they are our allies and they helped us".
