Feds charge college professor with running fake trade school

Feds charge college professor with running fake trade school”

According to prosecutors, while Abdel-Sayed was an employed lecturer at Medgar Evers in the Biology department, he freelanced between 2013 and 2017 by teaching unauthorized courses on topics like electrocardiograms, phlebotomy and sonography, and gave students fake certificates of completion that he told employment agencies were issued by Medgar Evers College.

A CUNY professor has been arrested, accused of selling fake course completion certificates.

"He traded on the reputation of Medgar Evers College and pocketed all the fees students paid while undercutting legitimate schooling being performed by colleagues across the campus", said Inspector General Leahy Scott.

A CUNY professor has helped potentially thousands of New Yorkers get medical jobs, including work in city hospitals, using fake medical certificates and phony adult-education classes, prosecutors claimed on Friday. Very little to no training ever took place, textbooks weren't used and students weren't graded. Abdel-Sayed was never authorized to teach any of those classes as a paid professor, and none of the fields even require licensing in NY state.

"Medgar Evers College and CUNY have cooperated fully throughout this investigation", CUNY said in a statement.

Investigators said that Mr. Abdel-Sayed, 68, of Kearny, N.J., told students his courses would save time and money; an official 200-hour class at CUNY to become a patient care technician, for example, costs $2,530.

Medgar Evers officials first heard about Mr. Abdel-Sayed's classes in 2015, and ordered him to cease and desist. Then, in January, two undercover investigators with the state inspector general's office, posing as students, attended his classes and bought his certificates, and recorded their experience on audio and video.

Mamdouh Abdel-Sayed faces one count each of conversion from a program receiving federal funds, soliciting bribes, wire fraud, mail fraud, and obstruction of justice in relation to the alleged school scheme. He was scheduled to appear in federal court in Manhattan later Friday.
