High-scoring Napoli beat Cagliari 3-0 to stay ideal

High-scoring Napoli beat Cagliari 3-0 to stay ideal”

It was more target practice for high-scoring Napoli in a 3-0 win over Cagliari on Sunday that extended the southern club's ideal record in Serie A.

Hamsik fired Napoli ahead inside four minutes from Mertens' clever pass, the Slovakian midfielder moving to within one of Diego Maradona's 115-goal club record.

With five minutes before the interval, Mertens converted from the spot to double the Naples outfit lead.

Kalidou Koulibaly scored from close range two minutes after half-time to leave Sarri to reflect on a superb start to the season during the global break.

Edin Dzeko seems determined to retain the Serie A top goalscorer award he won a year ago and he netted his seventh goal of the season to set Roma on its way to a 2-0 win at AC Milan on Sunday.

The pressure will not be on Juventus, who were to travel to Atalanta later yesterday as the champions also look for a seventh win in as many games.

Napoli coach Maurizio Sarri conceded he was relieved after coming through the early afternoon match in a week when they earned their first Champions League points with a 3-1 win over Feyenoord.

Lazio host Sassuolo at the Olimpico whilst Roma will play at the San Siro at 6 pm in the most interesting game of the day against AC Milan.

The southern club hit both the crossbar and post but couldn't overcome two early goals from Marcelo Brozovic, the second of which was a perfectly curled free kick.

Marco D'Alessandro got one back just before the break and missed a chance for an equaliser.

Lazio defeated Sassuolo 6-1 at home to ensure they will go into the global break in fourth place.

The match was marred, however, by racist chants from Lazio fans directed at Sassuolo players Claud Adjapong and Alfred Duncan.

Torino, in seventh, were held to a shock 2-2 draw by ten-man Verona despite being two goals up until the 89th minute.
