Hockey broadcaster Strader dies at 62”

Dave Strader, the Dallas Stars' announcer who found relief from chemotherapy in the announcing booth, has died of cancer.

"Dave Strader will be known as one of the greats". He previously was the broadcaster for the Detroit Red Wings, Arizona Coyotes and Florida Panthers and worked three Olympic Games.

"Everyone who knew him, and everyone who was able to listen to him call games, is saddened to learn about the passing of Dave Strader", Stars President and CEO Jim Lites said in a team release.

After joining the Stars in the 2015-16 season, Starder was limited to calling just five games a year ago after his cholangiocarcinoma diagnosis. As a result, he was limited to calling just five games for the Stars in the 2016-17 season. "And I don't even feel like the last nine months even happened". Prior to this, Strader was the television voice of the Detroit Red Wings from 1985 to 1996.

Starder's career was brought to a special spotlight earlier this year when he was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame when it was announced that he was the recipient of the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.

Prior to joining the Stars, he called NHL games nationally for NBCSN.

At the press box ceremony, Strader and his wife Colleen announced establishment of the Dave Strader Scholarship that he and his wife Colleen have started.

Donations may be sent to Janice Casey, treasurer, Glens Falls City Schools, 15 Quade St., Glens Falls, 12801.
