Israel denies involvement in Iraqi Kurdish referendum”

Among the leaders who accused Israel of working behind the scenes to aid the Kurds are Turkish President Recep Erdogan and Hassan Nasrallah, head of the Islamic terror group Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied Turkey's accusation that the regime was involved in a recent controversial secession referendum in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

Erdogan yesterday said that the fact that Israeli flags were waved during events celebrating the "yes" vote in Kurdish areas proves Israel's involvement.

Speaking at the start of Israel's weekly cabinet meeting in Jerusalem, Netanyahu sarcastically commented on Erdogan's allegation, saying "I understand why those who support Hamas and want to see the Mossad everywhere that is uncomfortable for them, but Israel had no part in the Kurdish referendum".

"Are you aware of what you are doing?" Erdoğan asked, turning to the Kurdish leadership in Iraq. "Only Israel supports you".

Citing a statement issued by the Baghdad-based defense ministry on Friday, Reuters reports that Iraq is planning to wrest control of the KRG's borders "in coordination" with Iran and Turkey, a move that came in retaliation to Iraqi Kurdistan's independence referendum that was approved Monday.

"If Israel does not reconsider its support for Kurdish independence, Turkey will not be able to take many steps we would have with Israel, too", he said.

Backed by Turkey and Iran, Baghdad, threatened to impose sanctions, worldwide isolation, and even a military intervention, demanding that the KRG cancel the results of the referendum.

The United States and other Western nations and the United Nations also opposed the vote, as did neighbors Turkey and Iran, which have large Kurdish minorities.
