San Juan mayor answers Trump's Twitter attack”

President Trump went after San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz on Twitter Saturday morning, accusing her of partisan bias and implying that Puerto Rico was not doing enough for itself in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island ten days ago.

Trump has repeatedly boasted about the positive reviews he said his administration is getting from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands for its relief effort, even as people in remote towns struggle to find food, water and other basics. "They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort". Roughly 10,000 emergency personnel are on the island working to distribute aid and restore power.

"This is what we got last night: four pallets of water, three pallets of meals and 12 pallets of infant food - which I gave them to the people of Comerio, where people are drinking off a creek", she said, reported by NBC news.

"I am asking the members of the press to send a mayday call all over the world - we are dying here", Cruz said.

Trump's comments come ahead of a planned visit to Puerto Rico on Tuesday.

But Puerto Rican officials say supplies have been held up in ports, unable to be delivered.

Mr Trump has pledged to spare no effort to help the U.S. territory recover in the aftermath of the hurricane, and also tweeted that military personnel and first responders had done "an wonderful job" despite having "no electric, roads, phones etc".

The department announced the trip Thursday evening after Duke's "good news" comments at the White House earlier that day.

"The end of my statement about good news", Duke said, "was it was good news that the people of Puerto Rico, the many public servants of the USA and the government of Puerto Rico are working together and I do believe that that is the way - part of the way - we believe, and it's nice to see the communities together trying to recover and support each other". Trump said the effort "will end up being one of the biggest ever" and noted that Puerto Rico already had "a tremendous amount of debt".

"We will not rest, however, until the people of Puerto Rico are safe", he added.

Later Saturday, Cruz - who has been living in a shelter after her home was destroyed in the hurricane - told MSNBC that the issue was not personal and said municipal employees were working as hard as they could. "We can not be distracted by anything else", Cruz wrote alongside photographs of relief work on the island. Then Duke said before leaving Washington that the federal relief effort was a "good-news story" because of "our ability to reach people and the limited number of deaths".

Police officers, firefighters and National Guardsmen loaned by other states were beginning to arrive to help local officials, Rossello said.

Cruz tweeted back: "The goal is one: saving lives".
