Trump, NFL strike sour notes on anthem”

The Pittsburg Steelers, except for offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva, did not come out of their locker room until after the national anthem. I don't know, but quarterback Donald Trump threw a wild rhetorical pass intercepted by the National Football League that then fumbled the ball.

The next step includes getting more involved activism. "It was an attack on injustice", Harry Edwards, Ph.D., said on the "Democracy Now!" news hour. He is an adviser to the San Francisco 49ers, where he advised Kaepernick himself. He has not yet been signed by another team. They are protesting systemic racism and police brutality.

Khan and Kraft were not the only coaches to stand and lock arms with their players in solidarity.

And yet, we would ask Colin Kaepernick - the original take-a-knee guy - and the legion of players who have since followed his example, "How's that working out for you?" As a former military officer with strong connections to people in uniform today, I say it's the vile bigot who is president that offends people in the military, not people expressing their rights to free speech. What damages us even more is the confusion of our kids who accompany their parents to a sporting event and don't understand why people aren't standing for THEIR National Anthem, or why the boos they hear aren't for a bad call from a referee, but for a bad call in judgment. Some raised a fist in the Black Power salute; others simply sat on the bench.

The US was already deeply divided over this stunt as people heatedly debated whether an athlete kneeling during the national anthem was the right way to draw attention to a cause, to say nothing of one such as police violence which all Americans were already well aware of anyhow due to the controversial street activities of "Black Lives Matter".

Some suggested it was an attempt to avoid the political row altogether, but Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger explained to ESPN that his team chose to stay in the locker room during the anthem as a symbol of solidarity.

His comments prompted the response of nearly the entire league, as many NFL owners made a decision to release statements of support or even lock arms and kneel with their players, as was the case with outspoken Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Those comments caught Shanahan off guard, though he said he wasn't surprised by the response from around the league. The court called it free speech. "But this is my country, and I'll work out the problems, but I'll do it in an intelligent manner". Probably the most divisive times of my live, I'd guess since Vietnam when I was a kid.

I know this is not the goal of their actions - it is a means to shed light on civil injustice. I worked with [John] Carlos and [Tommie] Smith [the two U.S. Olympic medalists who raised their fists in the Black Power salute while on the podium at the 1968 Summer Olympics].

This protest came after Browns coach Hue Jackson said, "I would hope that we don't have those issues". But, the most bothersome thing is how everyone sees that position in our country and you expect that position to be the best leader possible and when I think of being a leader, I think of bringing people together.

Principled stands taken at great risk are often how movements are born.
