Winter tires mandatory for BC drivers on most highways

Winter tires mandatory for BC drivers on most highways”

The province requires passenger vehicles to be equipped with winter tires between October 1 and March 31 while travelling on nearly all highways outside the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island.

It's also mandatory that commercial vehicles carry chains.

The provincial government has issued a reminder to the public to install winter tires on their vehicles if they are driving through designated highways that require the tires.

"That's why it's important to ensure your vehicle is properly equipped with snow tires with the Mountain Snowflake or Mud and Snow symbol, along with good solid treads".

In BC, winter tires are labelled with either the Mountain Snowflake symbol or the Mud and Snow Symbol, which is located on the sidewall of the tire.

While winter tires are not required on highways in the Lower Mainland, they are required on much of the Sea-to-Sky Highway, as well as routes north and east of Hope.

They must also be in good condition and have at least 3.5 millimetres of tread.

Drivers could face a $121 fine for travelling on nearly any highway outside of the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island without following the requirements.

Designated areas that require winter tires have posted signs that warn drivers. Those who do not have the minimum tread depth on their tires could end up paying a fine of $109.
