Zuckerberg details Facebook's response to Puerto Rico's humanitarian crisis”

Facebook (FB) is dispatching employees to Puerto Rico to help restore telecommunications services on the hurricane-battered island, as well as contributing funds to the recovery effort.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a post on the social networking site that Facebook is sending its connectivity team to Puerto Rico, which faces a growing humanitarian crisis in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

With 90 percent of the island territory's cell towers out of service, people on the island are finding it impossible to communicate with loved ones on the mainland in the USA, and rescue workers can't coordinate their relief efforts.

"Communication is critical during a disaster".

Zuckerberg also said the company will donate $1.5 million to two organizations - NetHope, which has a team on the ground restoring connectivity, and the World Food Programme, a United Nations group that addresses hunger.

When the person whose number you entered in Puerto Rico connects to AT&T's wireless network on the island, AT&T will give them your number and let them know you're trying to contact them.

Facebook will also donate ads to get important information to people in affected areas. "We need more help with people being deployed so that we can get logistical support elsewhere", he said on a television show Tuesday morning, "and we need Congress to take action so that we can have an aid package that is real for the American citizens that live in Puerto Rico".
