Bayern Munich part company with coach Carlo Ancelotti after PSG defeat”

Ancelotti's assistant Willy Sagnol will take over on a temporary basis, with former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel likely to be at the head of the queue to replace the Italian full-time.

Carlo Ancelotti has left his role as coach at Bayern Munich, the club confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

Following Wednesday's 3-0 Champions League defeat by Paris St-Germain, the club's board has chose to dismiss the Italian, who replaced Pep Guardiola at the start of last season.

The coup de grace to the Italian's reign was delivered by one of his former clubs, Paris Saint-Germain, with their 3-0 win in the French capital Bayern's heaviest group-stage defeat in the UEFA Champions League.

The decision to leave Arjen Robben, Franck Ribery and Mats Hummels on the bench and Jerome Boateng out of the squad, despite no indication of any injury problems, prompted criticism of the coach. "And one from which we have to draw our consequences", the 62-year-old said.

Ancelotti, who won the Bundesliga in his first season in charge after taking over from Pep Guardiola, endured a shaky start to his second season. "I now expect the team to have a positive development and top performance, so we can reach our goals for this season".

Ancelotti's under-performing Bayern are back in action on Sunday, away to Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Among the potential replacements being mentioned is Thomas Tuchel, now a free agent after leaving Dortmund at the end of last season.

Ancelotti has also coached Parma, Juventus, AC Milan, Chelsea, PSG and Real Madrid, winning the Champions League three times in his career.
