Securities regulator says personal info was leaked in breach”

This is not the first time the SEC's information security system has been questioned.

Clayton said in a Monday statement that hackers accessed the birthdates and Social Security numbers of two people by breaching the SEC's EDGAR electronic filing system, through which publicly traded companies make public and private disclosures about their financial affairs.

"Chairman Clayton was informed by staff of this new information this past Friday, and staff are reaching out to the two individuals to notify them and offer to provide them with identity theft protection and monitoring services", the SEC statement reads. Mr. Clayton learned September 29 that personal data was breached, the agency said.

"The 2016 intrusion and its ramifications concern me deeply", SEC Chair Jay Clayton said in a statement. There can sometimes be a lag between the time when the reports are electronically filed with the agency and when they can be viewed by the public, making the system a potentially lucrative target to hackers hoping to learn sensitive information before the rest of the market.

The SEC disclosed on September 20 that hackers previous year broke into its system that allows companies to digitally upload their documents, commonly known as EDGAR. "I am focused on getting to the bottom of the matter and, importantly, lifting our cybersecurity efforts moving forward".

Clayton initiated an assessment of the SEC's cybersecurity risk profile upon taking office in May. This effort includes assessing the types of data the SEC takes in through the EDGAR system, and whether EDGAR is the appropriate mechanism to obtain that data. The agency is also considering whether to upgrade the Edgar system, according to the SEC statement. The staff also will work to enhance escalation protocols for cybersecurity incidents in order to enable greater agency-wide visibility and understanding of potential cyber vulnerabilities and attacks.
