Windy conditions make for tough 1st day of Presidents Cup

Windy conditions make for tough 1st day of Presidents Cup”

Bush and Bill Clinton were in attendance at Liberty National Golf Club in New Jersey on Thursday for the Presidents Cup. The Friday four-ball was nearly a full American wipeout, with the margin growing to a massive 8-2.

Texas-born duo Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed added a second point as they defeated Emiliano Grillo and Si Woo Kim 5&4, only for Nick Price's global team to then fightback. A 4-4 tie is available at 6/1 and the worldwide side can be supported at 11/4 in those odds.

The American pair Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler set the tone in the first match, thrashing Hideki Matsuyama and Charl Schwartzel 6&4. They headed off into four matches of fourballs in the afternoon with a mathematical chance to win the cup before the Sunday singles.

With the Presidents Cup - the PGA Tour event that pits a team of a top American golfers against their counterparts from around the world - now in its third day, golf fans were decked out in patriotic garb in support of the U.S. Team.

Despite the huge lead for the Americans, Price pointed out that there is still a long way to go and he was trying to keep the atmosphere in the team room optimistic.

FedEx Cup champion Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler routed Charl Schwartzel and Hideki Matsuyama, despite the worldwide pair going ahead with a birdie at the par-five second.

Kevin Kisner buries a 16-footer for birdie to win the opening hole for he and Mickelson against Jhonattan Vegas and Emiliano Grillo.

The International team, comprised of players from the rest of the world excluding Europe, have now lost the opening session six consecutive times at the biennial event.

Hope remains for the worldwide side thanks to Branden Grace and Louis Oosthuizen, who secured a hard-fought 2&1 victory over Daniel Berger and Brooks Koepka.

Mickelson again came up trumps on the Presidents Cup stage, all square before a clutch birdie on the 18th from the veteran stole the match from the Aussie's 1up.

"We hope he comes and he'll be welcomed by us and by our players", Monahan told the AP.

"I get excited about the fact that three individuals ascended to the highest office in the land and golf was an important part of their life and continues to be an important part of their life", Monahan said. His Friday arrival will mark the 66th time the 45th President has visited one of his 17 golf clubs (and, for majority, presumably played some golf) since becoming President on January 20, 2017.

Pro golfer Phil Mickelson recently took a selfie with not one, not two, but three former USA presidents.

"It was back and forth the whole day", said Day.
