Yankee Stadium Netting Will Be Extended for Next Season

Yankee Stadium Netting Will Be Extended for Next Season”

The Yankees announced on Sunday that they will "significantly expand the protective netting during the upcoming offseason at both Yankee Stadium and George M. Steinbrenner Field [in Tampa]".

Major League Baseball issued recommendations for protecting netting or screens in December 2015, encouraging teams to have it in place between the ends of the dugouts closest to home plate.

Frazier sent a foul ball clocked at 106 miles per hour into the lower level seats on the third base side of Yankee Stadium just past the visiting dugout.

Frazier expressed immediate concern the second his foul ball was launched into the seats, clearly shaken up with tears in his eyes as the young girl who was struck was attended to. The New York Yankees plan to expand protective netting at their home ballpark and spring training complex next year.

The protective netting at Yankee Stadium now ends at the home plate side of each dugout.

The MLB recently vowed to "redouble" its efforts to expand the netting after a Yankees-Twins game on September 20 in which Yankees player Todd Frazier sharply fouled a ball into the stands along the third baseline, striking the young girl.

"As previously announced, the Yankees consulted (and are continuing to consult) with architects, engineers, netting manufactures and Major League Baseball to analyze and determine the best and most appropriate type of netting material, color and installation methods".

The team says it also has considered comments from fans.

That incident prompted multiple teams, including the Reds and Mariners, to immediately announce they were expanding the protective netting at their home stadiums.

Before Frazier's foul ball hit a fan in the face, a man was hit in the head in July by a foul ball from NY rookie Aaron Judge.

The girl was being treated at a local hospital, according to the Yankees.
