10 million people in the U.S. saw Russian election ads: Facebook”

Schrage said that the total reach of dubious Russian ads was 10-million people, but only 44% of ad impressions (the number of times ads were displayed) were before the election.

Facebook, which has handed around 3,000 ads to congressional investigators, is over overhauling the way it handles paid political advertisements.

Facebook declined to expand on the nature of the ads found beyond its September 6 blog post that said "the ads and accounts appeared to focus on amplifying divisive social and political messages across the ideological spectrum - touching on topics from LGBT matters to race issues to immigration to gun rights". In many cases, the ads encouraged people to follow pages on those issues.

The ads appeared to be linked to a Russian entity known as the Internet Research Agency, and violated Facebook policies because they came from inauthentic accounts, according to Kaplan.

Mr Zuckerberg has been heavily criticised over recent months, over the social network's role in the 2016 US Presidential election. Facebook's ads were turned over to the House and Senate intelligence committees and the Senate Judiciary Committee. "Congress and the Special Counsel are best placed to put these pieces together because they have much broader investigative power to obtain information from other sources". Between 2015 and 2017 about 500 unverified accounts, linked to a Russian company, would have spent 100,000 dollars in ' ads ', advertising spaces offered by social network.

Facebook vice president of communications Elliot Schrage on Monday posted answers to "hard questions" prompted by the Russian Federation ads.

The social media giant, which had not previously given such an estimate, said in a statement on Monday it used modelling to estimate how many people saw at least one of the 3000 ads.

It will allow anyone to view any political ads that run on the site, no matter whom they target, and also force political advertisers to reveal who is paying for the ads.

Russian ads designed to create social and political divisions reached around 10 million Facebook users in the USA, the company has revealed.

Twitter has said it found postings linked to the same Facebook accounts, and the House and Senate intelligence panels have asked both companies, along with Google, to testify publicly in the coming weeks.

Facebook's decision to give the ads to Congress means the pressure is now on lawmakers to release the ads to the public. Mark Warner and California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrats on the Senate and House intelligence panels - have said they believe the American public should see them.

Schiff said he hopes to release a sampling of the ads at a public hearing with the firms.

Anger has been building in America over how Moscow was given free rein to stir divisions in American society through the use of fake ad buying accounts by Facebook at such a critical juncture, sparking calls for increased government regulation of its activities.

Twitter said last week that it had suspended 22 accounts corresponding to the 450 Facebook accounts that were likely operated out of Russian Federation.
