Fruit Shoot maker shutting down Norwich factory

Fruit Shoot maker shutting down Norwich factory”

Jeremiah Colman first started making mustard in a village near Norfolk in 1814, and his company developed into one of the UK's best-known food brands.

"Although no decisions have been made, we need to recognise that Britvic's proposed withdrawal would have serious implications for Unilever in Norwich", Unilever said.

The move will lead to the loss of 242 jobs at the site, although Britvic said it will attempt to help employees find roles at other sites.

Production will now be transferred to its manufacturing plants in East London, Leeds and Rigby as the company aims to improve the efficiency and productivity of its operations.

The Unite national officer Rhys McCarthy said: "This is very painful news for our members and their families at Britvic and we will be giving the maximum support to our members at what is a very hard time in the days and weeks ahead".

Drinks giant Britvic said this morning they were closing their operations in Norwich, putting 240 jobs at risk.

Britvic announced a three-year business plan in November 2015 and has invested £240m in its United Kingdom manufacturing operations.

Rival mustard maker Keen Robinson & Company was bought in 1903 and it came with a barley water business.

The firm admitted it is considering the closure of the factory altogether - which could bring the end of the link between Colman's and the city of Norwich.

Later, in 1938, Colman's merged with Reckitt and Sons to become households conglomerate Reckitt and Colman.

The company's board has approved the proposal and consumer goods company Unilever PLC, which co-owns the site, has been informed of the decision.

Trade union Unite, which expressed "concern for the future of Colman's Mustard brand", said Unilever is expected to conclude its review by the end of November. "Everything is up for review including expanding its operations, selling part of the site and, more worryingly, closure".
