Mattis suggests sticking with Iran nuclear deal

Mattis suggests sticking with Iran nuclear deal”

Decertification would not necessarily mean all business ties are off. Europe and Asia have growing business ties with Iran, and officials from both continents are urging the U.S.to stay in the deal.

Iranian diplomats say they expect President Donald Trump to abandon the worldwide deal restricting Tehran's nuclear activities.

Although the opponents of the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal often speak of Tehran in hyperbolic terms-as a "murderous regime" and as an exporter of "death and destruction"-their main criticism of the agreement is more mundane".

"I believe., absent indications to the contrary, it is something that the president should consider staying with", Mattis added. But proponents of the deal may have just found an unlikely ally in Secretary of Defense James Mattis, who earlier Tuesday stated unequivocally that the deal serves the national security interest of the U.S.

The Iranians say if Europe and the other signatories, Russian Federation and China, stick with the deal and don't join a renewed sanctions regime, then Tehran will continue to adhere to the agreement.

European diplomats have begun mounting a defence of the nuclear deal for policy ears, and in order to convince Washington that the Iran deal is still in their interests and those of the Middle East. It revolves around clauses known as the "sunset provisions", which stipulate when the various restrictions imposed on Iran's nuclear program expire and which critics say provide Iran with a patient pathway to acquiring nuclear weapons.

"This is the exactly the right direction and a big, courageous step for the U.S.A.", Gabriel said in a statement.

Marine Corps General Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, had said previously that Iran was complying with its obligations under the nuclear deal, but had increased its activity in other areas. Trump has certified Iran's compliance with the agreement twice since taking office but repeatedly suggested that he will refuse to do so a third time.

Trump tweeted: "I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man..." They are intensifying their lobbying of European governments, especially the signatories to the agreement, France, Britain and Germany, hoping they can dissuade the USA administration from repudiating the agreement.

French Ambassador Gerard Araud noted that the other countries that signed the pact had made clear that they do not support renegotiating it.
