Mother faces murder charge in 2-year-old son's death”

The Kenner Police Department is now investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy.

Twenty-seven-year-old Twyana Thomas has been charged with second degree murder and her one-year-old daughter, four-year-old son, and nine-year-old daughter will soon be transferred to the Department of Child and Family Services, according to the Kenner Police department.

Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich identified the child as Chase Thomas.

Initially, Thomas was charged with cruelty to a juvenile, pending a full investigation into the toddler's cause of death.

"On Saturday, September 30, 2017, at 8:21 p.m., the Kenner Police Department responded to 1013 31st Street, in reference to a 2-year old who was experiencing trouble breathing", said Lt. Brian McGregor.

First responders on the scene reported seeing significant bruising on the toddler's body, and reported he appeared to be "extremely malnourished", leading investigators to believe the child had been beaten and abused.

"The toddler was observed to have ligature marks to the left forearm, which indicated at some point the toddler had been bound", said McGregor. Authorities say Thomas now faces a charge of second-degree murder after an autopsy determined the boy died from blunt force trauma and abuse. Numerous scratches were also found on the child's back.

Thomas also admitted to tying up her son with a cloth-like material on several occasions so he would stop moving when he was misbehaving, investigators said.

Thomas remains in custody. Officials say Thomas claims she is now pregnant. Bond has not been set.

Kenner police are expected to release more information about the case later Monday morning.
