Physics Nobel Prize Honors Work On Gravitational Waves; Win For US Team”

"The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has made a decision to award the Nobel Prize in Physics 2017 with one half to Rainer Weiss and the other half jointly to Barry C. Barish and Kip S. Thorne for decisive contributions to the LIGO detector and the observation of gravitational waves", the statement read.

The group was awarded the prestigious prize for their contribution to the LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory) research project. What they saw was the result of two black holes whipping around each other and colliding - and then sending out the disturbance that was later picked up on Earth, by the three winners.

"A wealth of discoveries awaits those who succeed in capturing the waves and interpreting their message".

Gravitational waves are "ripples" in the fabric of space-time caused by some of the most violent and energetic processes in the universe, according to California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

The Nobel Prize in Physics is traditionally awarded after the prize in Medicine.

The prize has been shared among multiple winners for the past 25 years.

This is the second announcement in a string of Nobel Prize awards that run through Monday.

The prize, established by the Swedish inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, in 1895, is worth 9 million kronor (€938,949, $1.1 million).
