Rock Legend Tom Petty Reportedly Taken Off Life Support After Cardiac Arrest

Rock Legend Tom Petty Reportedly Taken Off Life Support After Cardiac Arrest”

There is no official confirmation from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but TMZ is now reporting that Tom Petty is clinging to life after being taken off life support. The followed it with a string of hits in the late '70s and early '80s, including "I Need to Know", "Refugee", "Don't Do Me Like That", "American Girl", and "The Waiting".

Born in Gainesville, Fla., Petty found his musical chops (and many of his future bandmates) in the college town.

Petty had recently finished a 40-year anniversary tour with his band The Heartbreakers, with a final performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on 21 September.

Responding to a 911 call, emergency services found Petty not breathing but detected a pulse, and rushed him to hospital in nearby Santa Monica.

By around 6 p.m., the news consensus seemed to be that Petty was "fighting for his life", as The Washington Post put it, but that he was still alive.

Though Petty and his band debuted their first self-titled record in 1976, they continued to perform over the past four decades.

Petty is known for his work fronting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, recording 13 albums. Petty drifted through a host of other bands, honing his writing and performing skills, before being reunited with a couple of his old Mudcrutch compadres in the first version of The Heartbreakers.

Petty's personal appearances manager told Fox News the office had "no comment at this time". Jeff Lynne co-wrote and appears on background vocals and bass guitar on the number, which was one of Petty's biggest hits. "But I really saw in the Beatles that here's something I could do", the Florida native and the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said.

"I don't see that I have anything to offer as a solo artist that I couldn't do within the group better", he told the Sun. I don't want to spend my life on the road.
