Russia Throws North Korea a Cyber Lifeline

Russia Throws North Korea a Cyber Lifeline”

According to Bryce Boland, a cybersecurity expert with FireEye, the new link provided by Russian Federation would actually heighten North Korea's resilience to attacks, Reuters reported.

This move has strengthened the cybersecurity capabilities of North Korea during a time of increased tensions with the United States and also lowers the reliance it has on China. The link was provided by China Unicom, a Chinese telecommunications firm.

The new Russian lifeline creates a new Internet access portal for potential North Korean hacking activity.

An attack by the USA on North Korea might be looked upon as a provocative move against the Russians, said a cybersecurity official and that might possibly escalate the tensions between Washington and Moscow.

However, a new internet connection from TransTeleCom appeared Sunday.

TransTeleCom did not respond to a request for comment, but a spokesman for the company told the Financial Times that it has a long relationship with the Pyongyang and had "historically had a backbone network interface with North Korea under an agreement with Korea Posts and Telecommunications Corp. struck in 2009".

It came amid increasing diplomatic pressure on North Korea, after the country launched two intercontinental ballistic missiles, flew mid-range missiles over Japan and conducted its sixth and largest nuclear test.

While China has opted to side more closely with Russian Federation than the the ongoing nuclear crisis between Pyongyang and Washington, Beijing has abided with USA -led sanctions at the U.N. China's Ministry of Commerce announced Thursday that all North Korean businesses would have to close within 120 days in accordance with the latest sanctions adopted September 11 by the U.N. Security Council, and scores of North Korean workers have begun leaving the country, Reuters reported Monday.

On Saturday, the Washington Post reported that a U.S. Cyber Command operation had been targeting hackers in North Korea's military spy agency, the Reconnaissance General Bureau.

It is believed by experts in cybersecurity that North Korea was behind numerous attacks of high-profile including the one on Sony Pictures as well as different banks.

A USA attack on North Korea "could be seen as a provocative move against Russia", Boland said.

North Korean children learn to use the computer in a primary school on April 2, 2011 in Pyongyang, North Korea.

TransTeleCom is owned by Russia's state-run railway company and has fiber optic cables that follow all the country's main train lines, including all the way up to the North Korean border.

It now carries an Internet connection for North Korea to the rest of the world as well.
