The RMT says the government is blocking progress on rail strike talks

The RMT says the government is blocking progress on rail strike talks”

Members of Aslef are set to walk out for 24 hours on Thursday in a dispute over working practices.

Thousands of rail passengers will be hit by more strikes this week on Southern Rail.

A limited West London line will be in operation during peak hours, and trains between Leatherhead and Guildford will not be running.

"My call to the prime minister is simply - call off the blockade on talks, end the centralised sabotage of the normal industrial relations process and let us get back into genuine negotiations with the private rail companies that allow us to resolve these disputes".

He said: 'The RMT has now targeted these as an opportunity to double up the inconvenience for passengers by staging two further strikes'.

Walkouts are being held on Southern rail, Arriva Rail North which trades as Northern, Greater Anglia and Merseyrail.

Most Merseyrail services will run between 7am and 7pm, with a break during the middle of the day, and some stations will be closed.

RMT boss Mick Cash said Theresa May was "sabotaging" talks over driver-only trains.

Services will be severely disrupted if the action goes ahead.

Rail passengers in the region face issues today and Thursday.

The latest 24-hour strike affecting Southern train services started this morning (Tuesday October 3).

The changes make drivers responsible for opening and closing train doors, with the RMT raising safety and access concerns.

"Our members voted by massive majorities for both strike action and action short of a strike, but the company have ignored that and have failed to seize the opportunity to give us the very simple assurances on the future of the guards, and the guarantee of a second safety-critical member of staff on current services".
