Aung San Suu Kyi stripped of Freedom of Oxford over Rohingya crisis”

(Web Desk) - Aung San Suu Kyi has been stripped of the Freedom of Oxford after the city s council chose to withdraw the honour over her response to the Rohingya crisis, reported the BBC.

According to a report by Times of India, Oxford City Council leader Bob Price supported the motion to remove her honour and confirmed it was an "unprecedented step" for the local authority. The exact reason behind this move was not clear, but the wider view is the allegations of ethnic cleansing on Myanmar of the Rohingya Muslims fleeing their homes to Bangladesh.

The council is to hold a special meeting to confirm the honour's removal on November 27. The trouble erupted on 25 August when Rohingya militants attacked security posts, triggering a military crackdown.

Suu Kyi was held under house arrest in Yangon for her pro-democracy campaigning during the rule of the military dictatorship.

Although barred from becoming president, her National League for Democracy party won the election in 2015 and she was named state counsellor.

Ms Suu Kyi studied philosophy, politics and economics at St Hugh's College from 1964 to 1967, and was later given an honorary degree by the university in 2012.

The state has rejected allegations of systematic atrocities, telling the United Nations security council that "there is no ethnic cleansing and no genocide in Myanmar".

Ms Suu Kyi said she continues to denounce human rights violations, but stopped short of criticising the military.

People are "absolutely appalled" by the situation in Myanmar, he said, adding it was "extraordinary" she had not spoken out about reported atrocities in the country.
