Dow, S&P, Nasdaq end at record highs; auto, airline shares

Stock futures trended higher early Monday, poised for a positive start to the fourth quarter after ending last week on a bullish note.

US stock-market indexes begin the final quarter of the year on a high note, with all the main benchmarks trading in record territory on Monday after opening higher.

The broad-based S&P 500 gained 0.2 per cent to 2,534.68, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index advanced 0.2 per cent to 6,532.07.

Researcher Markit releases its October Manufacturing purchasing managers index at 9:45 a.m. ET. Anything below 20 is normally considered low on the volatility index. The Institute for Supply Management follows up with its manufacturing index, and the Commerce Department reports August construction spending estimates, both at 10 a.m. ET.

Airline companies helped lift United States markets on Tuesday, after Delta Air Lines reported that the hit from recent hurricanes would be lower than analysts had expected.

In currency news, the US dollar index (DXY) spiked to seven-week highs as the euro fell amid tensions in Spain's autonomous community of Catalonia.

The S&P 500 rose 0.24 percent as gains in health care and financials outweighed losses in technology.

Oil prices pulled back on Monday amid a weekly rise in the number of active US oil rigs. ICE Brent futures declined 71 cents, or 1.3%, to $56.08 a barrel.
