Film producers decide not to release Tamil movies from Friday

Film producers decide not to release Tamil movies from Friday”

"No new Tamil films will release this week as we feel the additional 10 per cent Local Body Entertainment Tax (LBET) above the Goods and Services Tax will disable the industry".

Tamilnadu Producers Council has now decided that there won't be new movie releases from October 6th, until the government sorts out the ticket hike issue and waives of the Entertainment Tax completely.

"On the other hand, continuance of an LBET, in addition to GST, will render cinema exhibition unviable, and will eventually kill the film industry", Asher added.

No new films to release in Tamil Nadu from Friday.

Vishal said they were ready to go on indefinite strike if the government did not consider their request.

"Various stakeholders have already explained their situation to the government". "Instead of regulating ticket prices, the decision to levy more tax will only lead to confusion".

This is seen as an attempt by the state government to have a control over the industry.

The multiplexes in Tamil Nadu have also chose to remain shut, protesting against the local body tax.

The Greater Chennai Corporation has recently issued a notice about levying a local body tax of 10 percent on Tamil movies and 20 percent on non-Tamil movies with effect from September 27.

Diwali is a big season for Kollywood as the theatres witness huge footfalls during the festive season. "All multiplexes operating in Chennai have announced that they are going on strike starting today", read a statement from the Multiplex Association of India (MAI). The association also said that the estimated loss per multiplex property due to closure could be ₹6 lakh per day.
