Monarch passengers brought back to United Kingdom since airline collapse”

With 12 days remaining and approximately 87,431 passengers still to bring back to the United Kingdom, the CAA is working around the clock, in conjunction with the government, to deliver the replacement flying programme following the administration of Monarch Airlines.

Monarch Airlines in the United Kingdom has collapsed, becoming the biggest-ever British airline to cause the repatriation of tens of thousands of travellers.

"Yesterday was a heart-breaking day as 2,000 people lost their jobs and we are all absolutely devastated for the customers and for all of us", Swaffield told BBC Radio 4.

More than a fifth of Monarch passengers have been brought back to the United Kingdom so far, in a mammoth programme coordinated by the aviation regulator. In turn, the events have sparked fierce competition and oversupply for popular destinations Portugal and Spain.

On Tuesday it was revealed that the vast majority of Monarch customers will not receive an automatic refund, with administrators KPMG estimating that just 10%-15% of those affected have bookings protected by the Air Travel Organiser's Licence (Atol).

"Fight details for people due to travel back to the United Kingdom on October 5th are already published on our dedicated website which has already seen over one million visitors over the past couple of days".

CAA chair Dame Deirdre Hutton said: "We had to beg planes from all around the world to bring everybody back".

Ninety-eight of those made redundant were employed by Monarch Travel Group, while 1,760 worked for Monarch Airlines.

The group's engineering operation, Monarch Aircraft Engineering Limited, is not in administration and continues to trade normally.
