Royal Mail PLC said late Tuesday it is "very disappointed" by the announcement that the Communications Workers Union has voted in favour of industrial action.

Dates for the first national strike since the company was privatised in October 2013 have not been confirmed.

A strike on those dates could cause major disruption at sorting offices and delay the delivery of millions of items snapped up online at heavy discounts.

The Communication Workers Union announced the results of its ballot of 110,000 members in Manchester this afternoon, located to coincide with the ongoing Conservative Party Conference.

The result was announced just after financial markets had closed for the day - with the value of Royal Mail's shares already down nearly 17% in the year to date, partly reflecting strike concerns.

"The news of a Royal Mail strike should set alarm bells ringing for retailers as they head into their busiest time of the year", said Shome.

But the source dismissed this as "rubbish" and said controversial changes made to pensions meant that agreement was now void.

Parcel comparison site ParcelHero said that "any action leading into the busiest Christmas period will have a huge impact on the ordinary public and could also be the beginning of the end for the Royal Mail".

'And for some families, the timing of any strike or work to rule could mean that Christmas is cancelled by this action'.

The CWU believes it is a "watershed" moment for unions - as well as the Royal Mail, following accusations of a "relentless" programme of cost-cutting to maximise short-term profits and shareholder returns.

The union is also in dispute over pay and issues such as delivery office closures. That's above the legal threshold that requires a voter turnout of over 50% to be valid.

CMU Deputy General Secretary, Postal, Terry Pullinger said the vote was a "massive vote of no confidence in the managerial leadership of the Royal Mail Group".
