South Africa players oppose CSA's proposed four-day Tests idea

South Africa players oppose CSA's proposed four-day Tests idea”

CSA had announced plans for the first-over four day Test pending approval of the ICC against Zimbabwe but it seems that the board has bypassed consulting with its own players before going ahead with the decision. The two Tests against the Bangladeshis are being played in "smaller" venues in Potchefstroom and Bloemfontein.

Du Plessis, who's participated regularly in the IPL, can see why there's an argument for playing four-day Tests. Lorgat had announced his resignation from the role a few days back in a move many expected to happen.

There have been a lot of questions over the Tigers' performance in the first Test against South Africa, with even Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim lashing out at his pacers and questioning their ability after a crushing 333-run defeat in Potchefstroom.

Lorgat has handed in his resignation as CSA chief.

"I am a fan of five-day Test cricket". It should not be allowed to suffer. I don't think you should tinker with something that's not broken. And you need the big names to attract people.

Man-of-the-Match in the Test against Bangladesh, Elgar also expressed similar sentiments and said that no one should change what has continued for long.

The two Tests that finished Monday supported the argument for Tests to stay as five-day affairs. The great Tests are the ones that finish in the last hour of the fifth day, that's what makes the format so special.

"It's been proved over and over again that day five is needed, but I guess four-day Tests might lead to more creative, aggressive captaincy". If you go and play around the world, Test cricket is followed quite well. "The players are all used to five-day Tests", Du Plessis told reporters.

"In four-day cricket or first-class cricket, it does feel easier because there are only four days", he added.

Moroe has held meetings with SA Cricketers Association chief executive, Tony Irish and CSA's GM Corrie van Zyl about the matter. "We know there are scheduling advantages but there hasn't been enough work done on it".

"I understand that they're looking at four day Tests so that there is less of a workload as far as the schedule is concerned. I am not sure that a four-day day/night Test against Zimbabwe is the answer".

Morkel's injury adds to a long list of injured South African fast bowlers, with Dale Steyn, Vernon Philander and Chris Morris already out of action for extended periods. That's the challenge with Test cricket.
