Yahoo Triples Likely Scope of '13 Hack to 3 Billion Users

Previously, the company estimated the hack affected one billion accounts.

After Verizon took over Yahoo, the company investigated further and discovered that it was actually 3 billion accounts affected - meaning every account ever registered on Yahoo.

Yahoo (VZ +1%) has bumped up its estimate for users affected by its massive data breach - from a previous 1B users, to all of them.

The new disclosure, four months after Verizon completed its acquisition of Yahoo, shows that executives are still coming to grips with the extent of the.

Oath did not specify what information was at risk for the users it now believes were a part of the breach, but said that hackers did not steal passwords, credit card numbers or bank account information.

That means that absolutely everyone who had a Yahoo account when the theft occurred in August 2013 was affected.

Yahoo suffered multiple intrusions into its network, losing email addresses, weakly-hashed passwords, and other personal information.

The largest hack in history just got three times worse for Yahoo. Yahoo's platform has also been accused of high levels of ad fraud by its customers, with sources previously telling CNBC that ads didn't run in the right place and numerous viewers were actually bots. These changes will also be required of the the 2 billion people now known to be included in the breach.
