ATF: Gunman had bump stocks attached to 12 weapons”

The weapon is still technically considered to be semi-automatic because there is no modification to the weapon's firing mechanism, but the bump stock allows it to fire nearly as rapidly as an automatic weapon.

While investigators reveal more information regarding the firearms discovered in a Mandalay Bay hotel room following Sunday's devastating shooting in Las Vegas, questions regarding the modifications to the weaponry surfaced.

Created to enable a semi-automatic weapon to fire like a fully automatic weapon, bump stocks are usually available for purchase on the Internet but Walmart and Cabela's- two of the nation's largest gun sellers - appear to have discontinued bump stock sales early Wednesday.

The shooter, Stephen Paddock, 64, had many of his rifles outfitted with a bump fire stock, a modified part that allows for rapid fire while dodging the laws banning automatic weapons.

Semi-automatic rifles, which can be legally purchased in America, allow only one shot to be fired with each pressing of the trigger. The shooter fires the gun by pushing the barrel forward, thus pressing the trigger against the static finger. The user simply needs to push forward on the front grip to push the trigger into their finger as recoil takes over.

The department released a compilation of body camera recordings captured during the shooting Tuesday showing officers directing civilians to safety - bursts of gun fire notably audible in the chaotic footage. The classification of these devices depends on whether they mechanically alter the function of the firearm to fire fully automatic. The ATF had previously determined that bump stocks are compliant with current federal gun laws.

Snyder said the bump stocks "simulate automatic fire", though she didn't identify which firearms from Paddock's arsenal of rifles, shotguns and handguns were used in the shooting. Yet the CBS News report opened with references to "automatic rounds" and wound down by suggesting bump stock devices are on the market because they "slipped through the legal cracks".
