BJP alleges GJM supporters pushed Dilip Ghosh, manhandled two other party workers”

Anit Thapa, a close aide of Tamang, the ousted GJM leader, said the allegations were baseless and that Ghosh faced public outrage for his own anti-Gorkhaland comments. He was then heckled following which he cancelled the meeting and lodged a complaint at a nearby police station.

"They had suddenly started assaulting us. The culprits will be arrested soon", Darjeeling superintendent of police Akhilesh Chaturvedi said. "It was pre-planned by TMC". And I think this planning has its roots in Kolkata. I got no help from police or administration.

"We received a complaint and have initiated investigation into the matter", a local police official told IBNS.

Dilip Ghosh claimed that he and few of his companions were beaten up by Trinamool Congress (TMC) activists and the followers of expelled Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) leader Binoy Tamang in Darjeeling hills on Thursday.

Asked whether Ghosh was provided security for the meeting, Chauturvedi said, "The police was outside the venue".

Partha Chatterjee, Trinamool Congress's secretary general, said the BJP itself is to blame for the Thursday's incident.

Ghosh had the backing of GJM president Bimal Gurung, who has publicly announced his support for the visiting delegation. "The statements is has been making has angered the people of the Hills".

He said hundreds of people in the hills greeted the BJP leaders and shared their problems. The response was tremendous, he told PTI.

The incident took place during Ghosh's three-day visit to the hills following unrest over the demand for a separate state. Darjeeling impasse: Centre ready for talks, Mamata isn't, says Bengal BJP presidentThe agitators were heard shouting "Long live Benoy Tamang" and "BJP go back". Tamang's supporters staged a protest demonstration against Ghosh when he reached Darjeeling. "People of the hills answered him back". "These goons are the same people who want to keep the Hills disturbed", said Ghosh.

Ghosh claimed it was due to his initiative that peace has returned to Darjeeling.

BJP leaders alleged that while they were leaving the meeting-place, the mob suddenly attacked them without any provocation.

Local Gorkha leaders from different outfits such as the Jan Andolan Party (JAP) and the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) have been demanding that the BJP clarify its stand on the demand for Gorkhaland.

"What was it (BJP) doing for the three-and-a-half months when the hills were burning?"
