In Catalonia hosted a large-scale protest

In Catalonia hosted a large-scale protest”

He also urged Spain's national police reinforcements to leave the region.

The violence Sunday left more than 890 civilians injured in the melee, two seriously.

A Spanish judge has placed Catalonia's regional police chief under investigation for alleged sedition, a court spokesman said Wednesday, after the force was accused of failing to rein in pro-independence protesters.

Puigdemont has appealed for worldwide mediation, although the European Commission said Monday that it "trusted" Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to handle the situation.

"This is not a domestic issue".

Puigdemont said there was now no contact between the government in Madrid and his devolved administration. Of those who voted, some 90 percent voted yes to independence.

"An attack on democracy without precedent in recent times calls for a united response", said Javier Pacheco, the secretary general in Catalonia of the Comisiones Obreras union.

Meanwhile, Spain's Ambassador to Ireland has said nobody disputes the right of voters to vote, but that the referendum in Catalonia was illegal from the beginning. "Far from solving anything it has added fuel to the fire", said Domingo Gutierrez, a 61-year-old trucker.

Some young Catalans have said they feel they are fighting not only for their generation, but for their grandparents as well. Three days later, the Catalans still haven't presented a final result.

He's also addressing the regional parliament Monday to review the disputed vote last Sunday - a session that his parliamentary supporters in the radical CUP group say will consider the independence declaration. The plebiscite was held under a tense atmosphere as national police and the civil guard undertook efforts to stop the voting, seizing ballot boxes and papers, as ruled by a Spanish court.

More than 890 civilians were treated for injuries, majority not serious, following clashes during Sunday's referendum, according to Catalan regional health authorities. Catalan regional leader Carles Puigdemont said almost 900 people had received medical attention on Sunday, though regional authorities confirmed a total of 92 injured.

King Felipe VI of Spain criticised the Catalonia government and did not condemn Sunday's violence.

Some Catalans said both sides bore some responsibility for the mayhem.

"What I find harder to understand is this indifference, or absolute lack of interest, in understanding what is happening here", he said.

"I've even been thinking about staying with the team after the World Cup". "They [European officials] have never wanted to listen to us".

Normally busy metro stations in Barcelona were deserted as services were cut back sharply, pickets blocked traffic on Gran Via street and traffic on six major highways in the region was disrupted by protests. The newspaper called Sunday "a defeat for our country". French President Emmanuel Macron called Rajoy on Monday to offer support.

Catalonia, with the vibrant city of Barcelona as its capital, represents a fifth of Spain's economy.

Those in favor of secession argue that the region contributes more to the national government than it receives in return. The benchmark IBEX 35 stock index fell another 2.0 percent in early trading Wednesday to a seven-month low, while the premium offered by Spanish government bonds over German ones - an indicator of political risk - rose to over 1.3 percentage points, the highest since April.
