Elon Musk says Tesla's batteries could replace Puerto Rico's electrical system

Elon Musk says Tesla's batteries could replace Puerto Rico's electrical system”

Tesla chief Elon Musk says his company can solve Puerto Rico's energy crisis using solar panels and batteries.

Rebuilding Puerto Rico's electrical grid in the same way would, however, be a project on an entirely different level, no matter what Musk says about Tesla's scalability limit.

"Such a decision would be in the hands of the PR govt, PUC any commercial stakeholders and, most importantly, the people of the PR". "Puerto Rico could be that flagship project", the Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, said. Do you want to show the world the power and scalability of your # TeslaTechnologies?

The Puerto Rican governor also used the exact same language - "let's talk" - as South Australia Senator Sarah Hanson-Young used before the project became a reality.

The vast majority of the island territory remains without power, weeks after it was hit by Hurricane Maria. According to local government figures, reported on by CNNMoney, only 9 percent of the country's residents now have electricity. Right now, the island imports and burns oil to generate electricity.

"They need a clean energy renewables plan and not spending hurricane money propping up the old fossil fuel infrastructure".

The other islands referred to by Musk include Kauai in Hawaii, where Tesla built a solar energy grid.

Tesla, however, has sent hundreds of its Powerwall batteries, which collect and store solar energy, to help provide power more immediately to Puerto Ricans.

For this last project, Tesla signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) of $0.139/KWh for 20 years. The electric vehicle maker's CEO tweeted that his company has already helped to bring more efficient power sources to smaller islands and could use this expertise to assist Puerto Rico in its moment of crisis.

Musk's landmark company has already been sending hundreds of Powerwalls, with Tesla employees helping with the installation of the battery packs and the fix of solar panels.
