O'Leary urges pilots to remain with Ryanair

O'Leary urges pilots to remain with Ryanair”

Mr O'Leary said over the next six months, pilots would see significant changes to and investment in rosters and pilot career development at Ryanair.

He promises bonuses and improved rostering arrangements and says the company will match and exceed the pay scales of rival airlines like Norwegian Air and Jet 2 - companies he claims don't offer the same job security.

In the correspondence, dated today and addressed to all Ryanair pilots, Mr O'Leary said he was writing to apologise personally to each of them for the disruptions experienced to rosters as a result of the rostering management failure in recent weeks. These changes include pay increases from Oct 1, a 12-month loyalty bonus and more jobs being created at bases where pilots "wish to live longer term".

The Irishman sent a three page letter to pilots yesterday begging them not to quit and promising significant improvements in work and pay conditions.

He said the critical comments made at last month's annual general meeting had been misreported and were specifically directed at pilots of competitor airlines and their unions.

Mr O'Leary said that he has always tried to treat the pilots with respect and urged them not to allow rival airlines to criticise Ryanair's success.

However, he stressed while he believed the differences would be "very few", the pilots will "continue to be employed on Irish contracts of employment".

The Ryanair chief executive told the pilots the airline will each year benchmark its pilot pay against its 737 competitors, particularly Jet2 and Norwegian.

The Ryanair boss also urged pilots who were considering a move to a "less financially secure or Brexit challenged airline" to stay with Ryanair "for a brighter better future for you and your family".

The letter promises that those who stay loyal to Ryanair will receive a pay increase of €10,000 for captains and €5,000 for first officers.

He included a screenshot of Norwegian's financial performance at the bottom of the letter, claiming that the airline was in "trouble".

'Everyone at Ryanair has known about the pilot shortage for months and months.

A portion of the letter sent to pilots.

Ryanair did not respond to request for comment last night.
