Retailers pull baby positioners from shelves after death warnings

Retailers pull baby positioners from shelves after death warnings”

The positioners are aimed at babies less than six months old and are a way to keep them in a certain position while they sleep.

It has been reported that other retailers - Mothercare and eBay - have also stopped selling the products.

According to the USA health regulator Food and Drug Administration (FDA), parents should not put babies in the products due to the risk of suffocation.

Tesco, which sold sleep positioners on its website through a third party, said, "We have removed these products from our website as a precautionary measure".

"These products can cause suffocation (a struggle to breathe) that can lead to death".

Tesco and eBay say they have stopped selling the baby sleep positioners, which have been linked to 12 deaths in the United States, with Mothercare reportedly following suit.

"Our team will be informing sellers and removing any listings that contravene our policies".

John Lewis later announced it would also be pulling the sleep positioner from sale.

In response to the warning, Mothercare confirmed to HuffPost UK that it had removed the sleep positioners from sale.

The organisation said that there had been 12 deaths between 1997 and 2010, but no more recent figures were available. Even if placed properly on their backs, infants may be able to scoot up or downward on the sleep positioning device and risk becoming entrapped and suffocate between the device and the crib side or bassinet'.

The FDA had issued a safety warning seven years ago, saying, "in light of the suffocation risk and the lack of evidence of any benefits, we are warning consumers to stop using these products".

Instead of a positioner, the FDA recommends placing babies in a bare cot as the safest place to sleep.

According to the FDA, the deaths occurred when babies rolled from their sides onto their fronts before they stopped breathing.
