Dentsu found guilty in overtime case

Dentsu found guilty in overtime case”

On October 6, Japanese advertising firm Dentsu announced it had been handed a JPY 500,000 ($4,426) fine for violating the country's labour laws, after a Tokyo court found that the organisation had made employees work an excessive amount of overtime.

According to the indictment, the four Dentsu employees worked up to 19 hours in overtime above the monthly limit agreed upon between management and labor during the period from October to December 2015.

Although it's tough to tell just how many people die in Japan every year due to overwork, the number of lawsuits filed claiming death by karoshi hit an all-time high of 1,456 last year.

A Japanese woman's death has thrust the country's labor conditions into the spotlight after claims she died from being overworked.

According to AOL News, Sado died of congestive heart failure.

A year after her death, local authorities concluded the political journalist clocked up to 159 hours of overtime a month.

In its first white paper on karoshi past year, the government said one in five employees were at risk of death from overwork. Despite that limit, there are still about 44.4% of employees from the communications industry who admitted to working more than the recommended overtime hours.

Sato covered Tokyo assembly elections for the broadcaster in June 2013 and an upper-house vote for the national parliament the following month.

"We take this ruling very seriously, and extend our deepest apologies to stakeholders and the general public for the concern we have caused", Dentsu said in a statement, adding that CEO Toshihiro Yamamoto will take a 20% pay cut for six months.

She died three days after the upper-house election. "We hope that the sorrow of a bereaved family will not be wasted". The broadcasting network says it released the cause of Sado's death in part to prevent it from happening in the future.

"NHK should proceed with the reform program after fully informing all its staff of our daughter's death and doing serious soul-searching", her father said.
