Feds investigating collision between drone, Army helicopter”

Law360, Nashville (October 5, 2017, 5:57 PM EDT) - The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into a September crash between a civilian drone aircraft and an Army helicopter, it announced Thursday, the first incident of its type to have occurred in US airspace.

While there have been several initially believable reports of drone collisions in the a year ago, no previous reports have been proven true.

Weiss said that DJI provided information that was instrumental in identifying the pilot of the drone, though he was not able to answer many questions about the details, noting that the investigation remains at a preliminary stage. A widely reported near miss at Heathrow airport was later determined to have been floating debris like a plastic bag. The drone damaged the helicopter's rotor blade and lodged into the fuselage. The agency also prohibits drones being flown beyond an operator's line of sight, and they must stay within 400 feet of the ground, below where helicopters typically operate.

"At approximately 7:20 p.m. September 21, the drone, or unmanned aerial vehicle, and the helicopter collided". A motor and arm from a small drone were recovered from the helicopter.

Federal investigators have opened their first probe of a mid-air collision between a civilian drone and a traditional aircraft. The Army confirmed soon after the incident that a drone had collided with one of its helicopters. "The Army is conducting a mishap investigation".

DJI, which made the drone, will help out with the investigation, and so will the Federal Aviation Administration, NTSB officials said. "We have always instructed drone operators to obey the laws and regulations applicable to drones in their jurisdiction, and we urge our customers to fully educate themselves about how to fly safely", the company said.
