Jake Fromm continues to lead the way — Georgia practice report

Jake Fromm continues to lead the way — Georgia practice report”

However, freshman QB Jake Fromm has stepped in nicely, leading the Bulldogs to a ideal 5-0 record so far.

Preparations for Saturday's game at Vanderbilt continued on Wednesday for Georgia on the practice field.

The Commodores coach talked about the Bulldogs' quarterback situation heading into this weekend.

"He makes smart decisions, he makes fast choices", Georgia outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter said. They have not gotten out to a 5-0 start, since the 2012 season. "Hopefully we'll get those picks". That said, Smart is not anxious about naming a starter. "We need to make sure our players understand and know how important practice is, knows whether they're going to be on the trip or not, whether they're going to be on special teams or not".

Both Cunningham and McKenzie have moved on, but Smart opened this week's press conference with a brief look back to what the Commodores and coach Derek Mason did to the Bulldogs previous year. "But it's about how you play, how you trust the coaches, how we practice, how we prepare". The Bulldogs rank fourth in the SEC in pass defense at 153.6 yards through the air per game.

"For us, we don't excuse it". The run game hasn't been able to get going, with the Commodores averaging only 2.9 yards per carry.

Defensive tackle Trenton Thompson was not present at Monday's practice, after he was forced out of Georgia's game against Tennessee in the second quarter due to a sprained MCL. He's thrown for 985 yards and 11 touchdowns to only one interception. "He will be the best pure passing quarterback that we have played against".

"First of all, he is very intelligent and does a great job with their offense". "He does a really good job of putting them in the right play. He puts the ball where it is supposed to be thrown and does a really good job of doing that". He reads the coverages.

Eason has appeared briefly in just two games and attempted four passes.

Smart has tried to create some mystery as to whether the Bulldogs will continue to start true freshman Jake Frohm at quarterback.

"Right now I believe Fromm is the guy", Mason said.

Of course, even if Fromm is the first-team quarterback during drills, that doesn't mean Eason couldn't play well enough to become the surprise starter. "Both those guys are mature and understand exactly what we're doing and they've responded well in practice". That wouldn't preclude Eason from playing, as he did late in Saturday's win over Tennessee, and perhaps more than in just mop-up duty. "That young man, Fromm, has won ball games".
