Leeds stun Castleford in Super League GF”

Leeds Rhinos put in a magnificent performance to claim their 8th Grand Final performance at Old Trafford, defeating a lacklustre Castleford Tigers in their maiden final appearance by 24 points to 6.

Tigers have been the best team all year, but they froze on the biggest stage.

Experience of the big occasion counted for much as the Rhinos kicked Cas to death in a display that was more about practical rugby than skill on a awful wet night.

The Tigers' hopes were then dashed in the third quarter as McGuire scooted over for a deserved try of his own - after Greg Eden had spilled a high kick from Joel Moon - and Briscoe went over in the right corner following excellent work from outstanding full-back Jack Walker, who replaces Rhinos team-mate Stevie Ward the youngest victor of a Grand Final.

When they chose to run it Jake Webster was inches from scoring and Luke Gale's grubber was then well defended by Danny McGuire on his own line.

That came after a spell of heavy pressure following a series of handling error by Leeds near their own line.

Cas survived with some good tackling near their line and when on attack again turned down another chance to kick a penalty. Greg Eden got on the outside and as he glided over the line to score somehow McGuire knocked the ball loose with a desperate tackle. But controversially the video referee ruled no try because of a knock on.

Four minutes before the interval McGuire kicked ahead on a free play and Briscoe touched down, but though Child thought it was a try Bentham decided he had pushed Paul McShane off the ball first.

As half-time approached McGuire capped off a brilliant 40 minutes with a drop-goal to edge it to 7-0. Watkins was accurate with the kick and the Tigers now had to score three converted tries in the last twenty minutes. With Watkins failing to goal it was 11-0.

The Rhinos wrapped up the game eight minutes later when Moon dummied, beat his hand and slipped a pass to Briscoe to touch down. Moon's pass was forward but it was given and suddenly the lead had grown to an unassailable 17-0.

It summed up their night when they took a short kick-off from another drop-out and got to the ball only to spill it.

Victory for Leeds was a formality thereafter and Burrow entered the fray late on before McGuire capitalised on a Tigers fumble to snatch another try.

Cas really knew it was not their night when Eden touched the ball down only to have what would have been his record equalling score ruled out as Hitchcox was judged to have put a foot in touch in passing the ball inside.

But two tries from Tom Briscoe and Danny McGuire apiece delivered for the Headingley club in a dour game of rugby league in Manchester.

It was their eighth title success since 2004 and, as they ruthlessly picked apart the favourites Castleford Tigers, how you could tell; it was equally obvious this was their West Yorkshire rivals' first.

Veteran half-back McGuire was a clear Harry Sunderland Trophy victor as man-of-the-match, Super League's record try-scorer fittingly scoring twice more in his last match before joining Hull KR.

Rhinos: Walker, Briscoe (2T), Watkins (3G), Sutcliffe, Hall, Moon, McGuire (2T, 2DG), Garbutt, Parcell, Singleton, Ward, Jones-Buchanan, Cuthbertson.

Castleford Tigers: Eden; Minikin, Webster, Shenton, Hitchcox; Roberts, Gale; Massey, McShane, Sene-Lefao, O Holmes, McMeeken, Milner.
