Mend your way or Trump will act, U.S. warns Pakistan”

"Right now, based on a very recent visit by the Chief of Army Staff from Pakistan, there is actually optimism here (Washington) and in Kabul that his visit presages a new chapter", Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Appearing before two congressional panels, Secretary Mattis revealed that the United States had chalked out a plan for reengaging Pakistan for resolving bilateral differences.

The Trump administration is contemplating possibility of the shuttering down Afghan rebels Taliban's Doha office as the U.S. army and the Afghanistan leaders muster efforts to finish with the armed group. "Our leadership was engaged in those meetings as well", said General Dunford. "We are also working with secretary general Stoltenberg to ensure that NATO's (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) equities are brought to bear", Mattis said responding to a question on why would Pakistan change its mind on terrorist safe havens this time.

"I would like to think we will be successful", but having said that, the United States "has an enormously powerful number of options" if not, said Mattis. And, these visits will be followed by visits by himself and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. "With the growing consensus against terrorism, they'll find themselves diplomatically isolated".

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis on Thursday warned Pakistan and said that if Islamabad does not change its behaviour and continued to support terror groups, President Donald Trump won't hesitate in taking necessary steps. "People from within India are on record to have admitted that TTP, JuA and other terrorist groups in Afghanistan are Indian assets, which they use to carry out terrorist attacks in Pakistan, and that India would not sever its ties with these terrorists". "What we are doing right now is we are aligning what Department of Treasury, Department of Defence, the Intelligence Committee, Department of State, say, this is what we must ask Pakistan to do to change its behaviour", he added.

The US will make a decision soon about whether the controversial Taliban office in Doha should remain open to help secure a political channel with the group, the US Defense Secretary said on Tuesday.

"We have seen havens left to the terrorists' own devices". He met with the Pakistan foreign minister on Wednesday 4 October in Washington and after the meeting said that he thought the US had "a reliable partner" in Pakistan and nearly in the same breath expressed concerns about the future of the stability of the Pakistan government.
