Stephen Paddock's father was on FBI's 10 most wanted list

Stephen Paddock's father was on FBI's 10 most wanted list”

While the 64-year-old gunman responsible for the deadly mass shooting at an outdoor country music festival in Las Vegas appeared to have no criminal history, his father was a convicted bank robber who tried to run down an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent in Las Vegas in 1960.

Paddock was a teen when an Federal Bureau of Investigation poster issued after the escape said his father Benjamin Hoskins Paddock had been "diagnosed as psychopathic". "He reportedly has suicidal tendencies and should be considered armed and very unsafe".

According to the Associated Press, the Paddock family eventually moved to Superior and then to Chicago.

"Paddock is known as "Chrome Dome" because of a practice of completely shaving his head", the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

His father had been convicted of bank robbery, auto theft and a confidence scam when he escaped from prison February 3, 1969, in El Paso, Texas.

He was caught in 1978, living under an assumed name in OR, where he managed a bingo parlor, according to a news report from after his arrest in the Eugene Register Guard newspaper.

After parole, he returned to the bingo parlor until it was shut down in the 1980s duing a racketeering investigation.

Stephen Paddock killed more than 58 people when he opened fire on a concert in Las Vegas, spraying a concert with a hail of bullets.

An FBI agent described Benjamin Paddock as "a glib, smooth-talking man who is egotistical and arrogant", according to an article published in the Tuscon Daily Citizen newspaper.

Stephen's brother Eric confirmed his father's identity and criminal history to ABC News, though he said the brothers "didn't know him" and he died several years ago.

Authorities said on Monday that Stephen had at least 10 rifles in a hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, where he had been staying since Thursday.

Armed with what appeared to be at least one automatic weapon, Stephen used the elevated vantage point to fire into the crowds across the Las Vegas Strip at the Route 91 Harvest festival, where the country singer Jason Aldean was onstage.

Authorities are still investigating the possible motivation behind what is now the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history.
