Court stops Catalan Parliament from declaring independence from Spain”

However, "on a fundamental point [Spain's prime minister Mariano] Rajoy was right: the referendum was illegitimate, having been suspended by Spain's constitutional court".

A representative for the Spanish government in Catalonia has apologised for the violence which marred Sunday's illegal referendum in the region.

Thousands of protesters gathered Saturday at rallies in Barcelona, Madrid, and other Spanish cities as Catalonians continue to push for secession from Spain after last week's independence referendum.

Large rallies were held Saturday in Madrid, Barcelona and other cities to demand that Rajoy and Puigdemont negotiate to find a solution to Spain's worst political crisis in almost four decades.

Similar protests were also held in Valencia (south-east), and Zaragoza and Valladolid (north), among others. The crowd wore white T-shirts and respected the organizers' call to not bring either Spanish or Catalan flags.

"With their decisions, they have systematically violated the law, showing inadmissible disloyalty to the powers of the state", said the king in a televised address, in the midst of Spain's most dramatic political crisis in decades. Spanish officials insist the referendum didn't count because the courts forbade it. Catalonia's leaders, however, maintain that the vote was valid and will stand.

"S&P Global Ratings placed its ratings on the Autonomous Community of Catalonia on CreditWatch with negative implications", the rating agency said in a statement released late on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the Constitutional Court ruled to block the parliamentary meeting called for Monday while it considers an appeal made against it, according to a spokesperson.

Earlier, thousands of people rallied across the country for Spanish unity. The writer Mario Vargas Llosa, Nobel literature prize laureate nationality peruvian and Spanish, which described the independance movement in catalan of " disease", will be part of it.

The speaker of the Catalan parliament Carme Forcadell warned such a move "would just increase support for the pro-independence side".

The most recent polls taken before the referendum showed that the region's 7.5 million residents were roughly split on the issue.

As the Bureau and Board of Spokespersons met again this Friday, Catalan president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont has requested to appear in Parliament on Tuesday October 10, in order to "inform about the current political situation".
