New revolutionary surgical glue can heal a cut in just 60 SECONDS

New revolutionary surgical glue can heal a cut in just 60 SECONDS”

Prof Weiss likens the glue to that of silicone sealants used around bathroom and kitchen tiles.

Yet, "currently available sealants are not suitable for most surgical applications and they do not work alone without the need for suturing or stapling because they lack an optimal combination of elasticity, tissue adhesion and strength". Internal injuries and wounds on organs that expand and contract are notoriously hard to seal.

According to Nasim Annabi, an author of the study and a researcher at Northeastern University, an effective surgical sealant must be elastic, adhesive, non-toxic and biocompatible. "Most sealants on the market possess one or two of these characteristics, but not all of them".

"We've developed a material that can do just that".

MeTro combines the natural elastic protein technologies developed in collaboration with author and University of Sydney McCaughey Chair in Biochemistry Professor Anthony Weiss, with light sensitive molecules developed in collaboration with author and Director of the Biomaterials Innovation Research Center at Harvard Medical School Professor Ali Khademhosseini. A range of MeTro hydrogels with different elasticities were created by varying the concentrations of the proteins in the substance. As soon as the glue is applied, the sealant is kept under ultraviolent light for securing it.

'When you watch MeTro, you can see it act like a liquid, filling the gaps and conforming to the shape of the wound'.

"The beauty of the MeTro formulation is that, as soon as it comes in contact with tissue surfaces, it solidifies into a gel-like phase without running away", said Annabi.

Being easy to apply, the gel can also be stored and works directly with natural tissues for healing.

These new MeTro gels could seamlessly close incisions in arteries and punctures in lungs of live rats, allowing the animals that otherwise would have succumbed to the procedure to survive. Researchers also found that the surgical glue could successfully seal wounds in pig lungs despite repeated inflations and deflations.

"MeTro seems to remain stable over the period that wounds need to heal in demanding mechanical conditions and later it degrades without any signs of toxicity; it checks off all the boxes of a highly versatile and efficient surgical sealant with potential also beyond pulmonary and vascular suture and staple-less applications", he said.

With its effect able to be altered from dissolving away in a few hours to a few weeks, the revolutionary substance also has the potential to reduce patient recovery time dramatically.

The potential applications of MeTro help to treat serious surgical internal wounds during emergency operations following auto accidents and in a war zone, and many other related hospital surgeries, researchers wrote in their paper. A new type of surgical glue can do what those cannot - create a truly complete seal.

The researchers tested MeTro to seal cuts in the arteries and lungs of rodents.

For example, says Professor Weiss, when a human lung is punctured it collapses and requires surgery.
